"I feel fine, so why should I get checked?" We hear this question often. The answer is simple: early breast cancer gives no warning. After 40 in particular, regular screening is the most important way to catch changes before they become a problem.
Why 40?
The risk of breast cancer rises with age, and most cases are diagnosed in women over 40. That is why most international medical guidelines recommend starting regular mammograms at 40 and continuing every one to two years, as your doctor advises.
"No Symptoms" Doesn't Mean "No Problem"
Regular screening can detect very small changes before they can be felt by hand. The earlier something is found:
- The higher the chance of a cure, with survival rates above 90% when the disease is caught early
- The simpler and shorter the treatment
- The better the chance of preserving the breast
- The lower the likelihood of needing intensive treatment
What Might Regular Screening Include?
Your doctor will decide which tests are right for you. These may include:
- Clinical breast exam: the doctor examines your breasts and underarms
- Mammogram: a breast X-ray and the most important early-detection tool after 40
- Ultrasound: sometimes added as a complementary test, especially for dense breast tissue
Your doctor will recommend what suits your age and health history, and how often you should be screened.
Common Excuses, and Our Answers
"No one in my family has had it"
Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. A family history raises your risk, but not having one doesn't mean you're safe.
"I'm scared of the result"
Fear is natural, but the vast majority of screening results are reassuring. And if something is found, finding it early is the best thing that could happen.
"I don't have time"
Between home, work, and family, your own health always ends up last on the list. Remember: taking care of yourself is taking care of everyone who depends on you.
"I do self-exams at home"
Self-exams help you know what is normal for your body, but they don't replace regular medical screening, because early changes can be too small to feel.
