Breast Cancer Symptoms: 8 Signs It's Time to See a Doctor

October 6, 20265 min

Many women notice a small change in their breast and think, "It's probably nothing. I'll wait and see." This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our message is clear: any unusual change deserves a check-up. Most changes turn out to be harmless, but the only way to know for sure is to see a doctor, and early detection raises survival rates to more than 90%.

8 Signs You Should Never Ignore

1. A lump in the breast or underarm

This is the best-known sign. A lump can be hard or soft, painful or painless. Don't judge it yourself: any new lump needs a medical evaluation, however small.

2. A change in breast size or shape

If one breast has become noticeably larger or changed shape in a way that is new for you, that is reason enough to get checked.

3. Skin changes on the breast

Such as dimpling or puckering, redness, or thickened skin with an "orange peel" texture.

4. A nipple that turns inward

If your nipple was previously normal and has started to pull inward or point in a different direction.

5. Unusual nipple discharge

Especially if it is bloody or clear, comes from one breast only, appears without squeezing, and you are not breastfeeding.

6. Scaling or irritation around the nipple

Persistent redness, flaking, or itching of the nipple or the surrounding areola that does not improve.

7. Swelling in the armpit or around the collarbone

Sometimes swollen lymph nodes appear before any lump can be felt in the breast itself.

8. Persistent pain in one spot

Breast pain is usually linked to your menstrual cycle and is rarely a concern. But pain that stays in one specific area and is unrelated to your cycle should be checked.

"But It Doesn't Hurt..."

This is one of the most common misconceptions. Early breast cancer usually causes no pain, which is why many women wait until symptoms get worse. No pain does not mean no problem, and putting it off is the biggest mistake you can make.
